Quotes To Help Build Confidence And Self-Esteem
In our companion article, A Simple Guide To Understanding Body Dysmorphic Disorder, we explored the nature of BDD, how to recognise it, and where to find support.
At Olyinka, our commitment to raising awareness of Body Dysmorphic Disorder comes from our first-hand experience with the women we meet every day. Through those conversations we often encounter body image difficulties that are rarely discussed openly, despite how many women experience them. BDD frequently goes unnoticed, leaving people to struggle alone without proper recognition.
That's why we've written a series of articles about it — to break the silence and encourage more open conversation.

A Brief Recap
Body Dysmorphic Disorder involves a distorted perception of one's own appearance. Difficult feelings can be triggered by seeing yourself on camera, in mirrors, or by comments from other people. Common experiences include:
- Continual comparison to others
- Self-doubt because of perceived flaws
- Anxiety about one's physical presence
- Concealing the body to avoid being seen
Treatment usually involves therapy alongside self-care practices. Affirmations and quotes aren't a substitute for that support, but many people find them a genuinely useful everyday tool for interrupting a negative spiral in the moment.
Steps Towards Feeling Better
Low self-esteem can weigh heavily on anyone living with BDD. Finding peace with your appearance is a continuous process rather than a fixed destination, and it begins with small daily steps towards noticing your thoughts, emotions, and triggers.
As you go through this, practise patience and allow yourself time. When you're feeling stressed or low, you might try:
- Spending a few minutes on deep breathing or mindfulness — paying attention to how you feel in the present moment.
- Beginning to accept yourself as you are. Easier said than done, we know — but reinforcing the idea that there is no perfect body is key, and it helps to actively look for the qualities you value in yourself.
- Recognising negative thoughts when they arise, and letting them pass rather than following them. Treat yourself with the kindness you'd offer a friend.
- Focusing on what's good in your life and letting yourself appreciate it — shifting attention rather than fighting the thought head-on.
- Most importantly, asking for help when you need it. Talk to a friend, a family member, or a therapist. Speak to your GP, or refer yourself directly to NHS Talking Therapies without a GP referral.
If you are ever in crisis or struggling to keep yourself safe, please contact your GP urgently, call 111, or contact the Samaritans free on 116 123, at any hour.
Ten Quotes For Difficult Days
These ten were written in-house, for the women we meet every day. Read them slowly, and stay with whichever one holds your attention.
-
"I accept my body today, love my body tomorrow, and appreciate my body always."
Your body is a journey. Accept it as it is now, and let love and appreciation grow at every stage of it. -
"Love your body, you only have one."
It is the vessel that carries you through your whole life. Treat it with kindness and it becomes somewhere you feel at home. -
"I will be kind to my body today."
Kindness is a decision rather than a feeling — one you get to make fresh each morning. -
"In love with my body today."
Fall in love with the body you have in this moment, not the version of it you are waiting for. -
"I am smart, sexy, talented and worthy. I am more than this body. I am beautiful, strong and fierce."
Your qualities reach far beyond your appearance. This is the reminder to count them. -
"My body is an instrument of beauty, strength and longevity. My body is a masterpiece. My body is a temple."
An instrument, not an ornament — made to do, not only to be looked at. -
"There is nothing more beautiful than a healthy body and mind. Believe it."
Wellbeing is the real luxury. Caring for both is what allows you to feel your best. -
"I am enough."
You do not need to alter yourself to meet anyone else's standard. The worth is already there. -
"I accept myself as I am."
Acceptance includes the flaws and the imperfections. Release the judgement, and peace follows. -
"I will give my body love, respect and gratitude today."
Your body is a canvas of your life, and every mark on it is a chapter. Take a moment to thank it.
Return to whichever of these lands for you. Write it somewhere you'll see it. Say it out loud if that helps.
Reflection
Reading a quote is one thing; sitting with it is another. Find somewhere quiet, take a few slow breaths, and give yourself a little time with these four questions. There are no right answers, and you can return to them as often as you like.
- What compliment would you give yourself today?
- Name one physical feature of your body that you appreciate — and why.
- What are the things your body allows you to do that you are thankful for?
- What is one thing you can do today to show your body love and care? (It may involve lots of hugs.)
