Women are finding creative and stylish ways to wear lingerie and loungewear pieces. These garments don't need to be confined to the bedroom, or hidden under clothes — they can be worn as outerwear. And why not? When tastefully done, lingerie can make any outfit look stylish, chic and very sexy.
For those of you still on the fence, we get it: lingerie is meant to be worn underneath your garments, and that's how you like it. But before you dismiss the idea, hear us out.
The underwear-as-outerwear trend is not new. In the Victorian era, dresses were designed to include a corset with the goal of pulling in the waistline. In the 1910s and 20s, flapper girls wore slips as dresses. In the 80s and 90s, Madonna made the bullet bra and corset famous — and a new generation of performers has since brought the look firmly into the mainstream.
So if you haven't yet found inventive ways to wear your lingerie as outerwear, here are seven ideas to get you started.
1. Corset or Waspie
A corset or corset belt worn over a dress, a T-shirt or a top.
2. Slip Dress
Convert your lingerie slip into a dress.
3. Shorts or Bloomers
A summer favourite — wear your lingerie shorts or bloomers and show off your legs.
4. Camisole
Worn with jeans, or under your favourite cardigan, a camisole can add instant glamour to an outfit.
5. Bra
A bra as outerwear can look very chic when tastefully done — under a vest, a cardigan, or a sheer top. Alternatively, if you're feeling bold, don't bother with the top at all.
6. Pyjamas
We call it comfort glamour. Pyjamas too comfortable to take off? Then take them to the streets.
7. Bodysuit
Can't be bothered to wear a top? Wear your bodysuit with boldness instead.
