Boob Positivity: What Women Really Think

Promoting Body Confidence Through Self-Love

We All Have Our Insecurities

We've all experienced the frustration of struggling to zip up a dress, avoiding specific tops, or crossing our arms and slouching to conceal our chests. Breasts vary widely in shape and size, yet we are constantly inundated with images of so-called "perfect breasts." It is no surprise that many women grapple with insecurity in the light of such an unrealistic standard.

Imagine if we shifted our perspective — abandoning the comparison to airbrushed models, and instead celebrating the beautiful diversity of women's bodies. By cultivating an open-minded approach, we can begin to dismantle the damaging narratives that reduce us to body parts, allowing us to recognise our worth beyond physical appearance. Embracing this diversity empowers women to feel confident and comfortable in their own skin.

Boob Positivity Is About Self-Love

The essence of boob positivity lies in self-love. It transcends being merely a trend or a hashtag; it embodies a mindset, a community, and a journey towards embracing our bodies wholeheartedly. Envision a life where you no longer feel compelled to conceal yourself beneath oversized garments or restrictive bras — where you have the confidence to wear any outfit you desire, free from shame or anxiety. That is the essence of true freedom.

Of course, real change takes time. Years of conditioning won't disappear overnight, but the more we talk openly and honestly about bodies, the more we chip away at unhealthy stereotypes.

Cultivating Self-Love

At Olyinka we are committed to advocating for a positive body image. We believe that transforming how women perceive their bodies begins in the mind, through the intentional practice of self-love. It comprises three essential steps:

  • Awareness: acknowledge your thoughts and feelings about your body. Question whether these thoughts are truthful and supportive.
  • Celebration: remind yourself daily of your body's inherent beauty and complexity. Make it part of your routine to celebrate your unique self.
  • Value reassessment: re-evaluate how you regard your body. Dismiss the belief that you are insufficient, and embrace your authentic self.

By engaging in these three steps, we can eliminate negative self-talk, disregard body shaming, and release unrealistic standards. This leads to a profound connection with our bodies, based on self-acceptance, comfort, and love — and that self-love radiates outward, empowering us to navigate the world with confidence.

What Women Really Think About Their Breasts

The Cut's article New York Women Draw Their Own Boobs offers an insightful look into the intimate thoughts and feelings surrounding women's bodies. Surveying 57 women aged 17 to 72, the publication invited participants to draw their breasts and write a sentence about how they felt.

The results were strikingly candid, vulnerable, and often uplifting. Each woman's drawing and accompanying reflection underscored the unique and deeply personal relationships we maintain with our breasts. Some expressed pride and self-acceptance; others navigated the complexities introduced by changing shapes throughout life. Insecurities were shared candidly, and some women chose to embrace the qualities that set them apart. This openness from such a diverse group provided a profound understanding of the emotional nuances involved.

Crucially, the project upheld an atmosphere of positivity by creating a judgement-free environment for self-expression. The drawings and reflections reveal that the feelings we harbour about our breasts are intertwined with our shared experiences as human beings. Listening to one another with an open mind enhances our capacity for understanding and support.

Women's perceptions of their breasts can also fluctuate significantly based on their bra fitting experiences. A supportive, well-fitted bra profoundly affects both comfort and confidence — which is why individual fit matters so much.

Embracing Our Authentic Selves

Our breasts, much like those explored in The Cut's project, narrate a personal story embedded within our unique journeys as women. As we learn to appreciate and accept our bodies, we engage in a profound act of self-love. This path is rarely straightforward, particularly given the societal pressures that surround us. But by celebrating our bodies and openly sharing our experiences, we cultivate a deeper sense of community and empowerment.
